Find a Domain Name

Since over 11 million domain names have already been registered world-wide, it can be difficult to find a good domain name. You can use the WHOIS Domain Name Lookup to confirm your domain registrations, as well as figure out what domain names are available:

Frequently Asked Questions

What do Domain Name, DNS & IP Address mean?

Domain Name
The computer hostname entered as part of a website, other URL or email address, such as "globlalrelay.com". No two organizations can have the same Domain Name.
Domain Name System (DNS)
A world-wide keyword-based Internet directory (lookup) service. DNS stores and associates many types of information with Domain Names, but most importantly, it translates and maps Domain Names to IP Addresses.
IP Address (Internet Protocol Address)
Can be thought of as the equivalent of a street address or a phone number for a computer or other network device on the Internet. Every server has a unique number utilizing the Internet Protocol standard (IP) in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network. Just as each street address and phone number uniquely identifies a building or telephone, an IP address can uniquely identify a specific computer or other network device on a network.

Why is Domain Name registration & DNS management important?

DNS is responsible for the global coordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers. DNS servers use these identifiers to inform users on the Internet where your services are by translating requests for specific services into IP addresses. All Internet services, including email and websites, rely on DNS servers. If your Domain is not registered or you DNS servers fail or are improperly configured, your website cannot be found and your email cannot be delivered.

How do Domain Names and DNS Management work?

When you purchase and register a Domain Name, your domain registrar uploads it to the Internet's root servers. There are currently 13 theoretically identical root servers on the Internet that manage all domain names. These servers provide Users worldwide with the location of the DNS servers associated with each Domain Name.

How does the DNS inform a computer of the IP address?

DNS provides the ability to map hostnames to an IP address - allowing multiple addresses and names can point to one Internet resource. For example, a request for www.globalrelay.com would be translated to the IP address of 204.92.49.140 by our DNS server, which directs your browser to Global Relay's website.

Try it... click on our IP address: 204.92.49.140.

A side benefit is that it also allows people to easily remember and use a name (such as "globalrelay.com") and not a series of numbers found in an IP addresses (such as 204.92.49.140). Imagine if you had to use an IP address rather than a URL or email address...

Do I have to transfer my domain name to Global Relay to use Global Relay's services?

No, you do not have to transfer your domain name to Global Relay in order to use our services. Global Relay prefers to have control over your domain in order to better manage, control and troubleshoot any technical issues that may arise, but it is not a requirement.

How long does it take to register a domain and for DNS changes to take effect?

Global Relay can register a domain quickly once it is confirmed to be available (verify that your desired Domain Name is available in the WHOIS LOOKUP on this webpage). Once registered, the domain becomes active right away. Transfers of domains are usually completed within a few days of initiation. All DNS changes occur in real-time, but it may take several hours for new DNS information to propagate throughout the Internet.
